Abstract

- In April 2018, two CPI cities in Sumatera Utara experienced inflation, namely Pematangsiantar of 0.56 percent and Padangsidimpuan of 0.76 percent, while two other cities experienced deflation, namely Sibolga by 0.64 percent and Medan by 0.01 percent. Thus, Sumatera Utara in April 2018 experienced inflation of 0.06 percent.
- In April 2017, Medan deflation of 0.01 percent or an index decline from 137.66 in March 2018 to 137.65 in April 2018. Deflation occurred due to price declines indicated by the decline in index of three expenditure groups, the group foodstuffs of 0.95 percent; clothing group by 1.00 percent; and the education, recreation and sports group by 0.03 percent. Meanwhile, the group that experienced an increase in index, namely the group of finished food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco by 0.44 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel by 0.23 percent; health group by 0.71 percent; and the transportation, communication and financial services group by 0.72 percent.
- Major commodities contributing to deflation during April 2018 in Medan, including red pepper, cayenne, dencis, rice, mackerel, women's jeans, and fruit tomatoes.
- Of the 23 CPI cities on the island of Sumatra, 10 cities experienced deflation. The highest deflation occurred in Sibolga at 0.64 percent with the CPI of 137.85 and the lowest occurred in Medan and Bandar Lampung by 0.01 percent with the CPI of 137.65 and 133.39 respectively.
