Abstract

• In August 2018, three CPI cities in Sumatera Utara experienced inflation, namely Pematangsiantar by 0.07 percent; Medan of 0.01 percent; and Padangsidimpuan by 0.01 percent, while Sibolga deflated by 0.37 percent; Thus, Sumatera Utara in August 2018 experienced an inflation of 0.00 percent.
• In August 2018, the inflation field was 0.01 percent or there was an increase in the index from 137.14 in July 2018 to 137.15 in August 2018. Inflation occurred due to an increase in prices as indicated by the increase in the index of five expenditure groups, namely groups food ingredients by 0.20 percent; processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco groups by 0.29 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group by 0.31 percent; and education, recreation and sports groups by 0.01 percent. Meanwhile the group that experienced a decline in the index, namely the clothing group by 1.30 percent; health group by 0.05 percent; and the transportation, communication and financial services group by 0.44 percent.
• The main commodity contributing to inflation during August 2018 in Medan, including red chili, cayenne pepper, rice, sweet bread, dencis, cassava leaves, and wall paint.
• Of the 23 CPI cities in Sumatra Island 13 cities experienced inflation. The highest inflation occurred in Tarakan by 0.62 percent with CPI of 144.99 and the lowest occurred in Medan and Padangsidimpuan by 0.01 percent with CPI of 137.15 and 131.65 respectively.
