Abstract

• The poverty rate of Sumatera Utara has decreased by 0.28 percentage points, from 9.22 percent in March 2018 to 8.94 percent in September 2018. This poverty rate is equivalent to 1.29 million people in September 2018, or reduced by around 33 thousand soul in the last semester.

• The percentage of poor people in urban areas in September 2018 was 8.84 percent, a decrease compared to March 2018 which amounted to 9.15 percent. Likewise, poor people in rural areas, down from 9.30 percent in March 2018 to 9.05 percent in September 2018.

• As of September 2018, the Sumatera Utara poverty line in total amounted to Rp.451,673, - per capita per month. For urban areas, the poverty line is Rp.465,790, while for rural areas Rp.435,492, - per capita per month.

• In the March 2018 - September 2018 period, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and Poverty Severity Index (P2) showed a decline. P1 fell from 1,562 in March 2018 to 1,459 in September 2018, and P2 fell from 0.407 in March 2018 to 0.333 in September 2018. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to be closer to the poverty line and the level of inequality of expenditure of the poor is decreasing.
