Abstract

In March 2022, inflation in Sumatera Utara Province (combined of five cities, namely Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Medan, Padangsidimpuan, and Gunungsitoli) was 0.71 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 107.91. Of the five CPI cities in Sumatera Utara Province, all recorded inflation, namely Sibolga at 0.93 percent; Pematangsiantar by 0.77 percent; Medan by 0.68 percent; Padangsidimpuan 1.11 percent; and Gunung Sitoli by 0.39 percent.
  • Inflation occurred due to an increase in prices as indicated by an increase in most indexes of the expenditure group, namely the food, beverage and tobacco group by 1.47 percent; clothing and footwear group by 0.07 percent; housing, water, electricity, and household fuel groups by 0.07 percent; household equipment, equipment, and routine maintenance group by 0.66 percent; health group by 0.13 percent; transportation group by 0.34 percent; information, communication, and financial services group by 0.03 percent; recreation, sports, and culture groups by 0.42 percent; food and beverage/restaurant supply group by 0.33 percent; and the personal care and other services group by 1.74 percent. The group that did not change was the education group.
  • The main commodities contributing to inflation during March 2022 include red chilies, shallots, gold jewelry, rice, tomatoes, mustard greens, and wafers.
  • The inflation rate for the calendar year (January-March 2022) is 1.54 percent and the year-on-year inflation rate (March 2022 to March 2021) is 3.26 percent
