Abstract

In February 2023 there was a combined year on year (yoy) inflation for five cities in Sumatera Utara (Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Medan, Padangsidimpuan and Gunungsitoli) of 5.88 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 113.44. Of the five CPI cities in Sumatera Utara, the highest yoy inflation occurred in Sibolga at 6.91 percent with a CPI of 117.15 and the lowest occurred in Gunungsitoli at 5.22 percent with a CPI of 115.65.
  • Inflation occurred due to price increases as indicated by an increase in the entire price index for the expenditure group, namely the food, beverage and tobacco group by 7.12 percent; the clothing and footwear group by 4.62 percent; the housing, water, electricity and household fuel group of 1.66; equipment, tools, and household routine maintenance group of 4.63 percent; the health group by 1.87 percent; transportation group by 18.08 percent; the information, communication and financial services group by 0.24 percent; recreation, sport and culture group by 7.39 percent; the education group by 0.57 percent; the group providing food and drink/restaurants by 3.85 percent; and the personal care and other services group of 6.97 percent.
  • The main commodities contributing to yoy inflation in February 2023 include gasoline, rice, air transportation, red chilies, filter clove cigarettes, inner-city transportation, purebred chicken eggs, dencis fish, and house rent.
  • The month to month (mtm) deflation rate in February 2023 was 0.31 percent and the year to date (ytd) inflation rate in February 2023 was 0.60 percent.
