Abstract

Sumatera Utara's poverty rate decreased by 0.16 points, namely from 8.15 percent in March 2023 to 7.99 percent in March 2024. This poverty rate is equivalent to 1.24 million people in March 2023, or a decrease of around 11.7 thousand soul in the past year.
  • The percentage of poor people in March 2024 in urban areas will be 7.93 percent, and in rural areas it will be 8.08 percent. There was a significant decline in urban areas of 0.30 percent.
  • The Poverty Line in March 2024 was recorded at IDR 642,423/capita/month with a composition of the Food Poverty Line of IDR 490,540 (76.36%) and the Non-Food Poverty Line of IDR 151,883,- or around 23.64 percent .
  • In the period March 2023-March 2024, both the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) experienced a decline. P1 fell from 1.261 in March 2023 to 1.227 in March 2024, while P2 fell from 0.324 to 0.302. A decrease in P1 indicates that there is a tendency for an increase in the average consumption expenditure of the poor to keep up with the increase in the poverty line, or in other words, the gap between the expenditure of the poor and the poverty line is decreasing. Furthermore, P2 - which provides an overview of the distribution of consumption expenditure among the poor - a decrease in this index indicates a reduction in inequality in consumption expenditure among the poor, or in other words the distribution of consumption expenditure is getting better or more even.
