On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the BPS-Statistics Sumatera Utara Province held a ceremony to commemorate the 2025 National Awakening Day.
National Awakening is marked by two pivotal moments in Indonesian history: the founding of the Budi Utomo organization in 1908 and the Youth Pledge in 1928.
The spirit of nationalism began to rise with Budi Utomo, the first modern youth organization dedicated to the struggle for Indonesia’s independence. This organization was founded on May 20, 1908, by students of the STOVIA medical school.
Awakening is not a one-time event that ends at a single point in history. It is an ongoing effort, a flame that must keep burning. National awakening calls on us not only to remember the glories of the past, but to bravely face today’s challenges—an era filled with far more complex tests such as technological disruption, geopolitical tensions, global food crises, and threats to the nation’s digital sovereignty.
Let us nurture the spirit of awakening like the roots of a tree that penetrate deep into the earth—moving slowly, often unseen on the surface, yet firmly supporting all life above.
On this occasion, promotion decrees (SK Kenaikan Pangkat) were also awarded to Nizaruddin, Surya Afriyanti, Nelly Fithriani Harefa, and Ayunning Tieas.
