Abstract

  • In September 2018, three CPI cities in North Sumatra experienced inflation, namely Sibolga by 0.39 percent; Medan is 0.09 percent; and Padangsidimpuan by 0.04 percent, while Pematangsiantar deflation by 0.24 percent. Thus, the combined 4 CPI cities in North Sumatra in September 2018 experienced inflation of 0.07 percent.

  • In September 2018, the inflation field was 0.09 percent or the index increased from 137.15 in August 2018 to 137.28 in September 2018. Inflation occurred due to an increase in prices as indicated by the increase in the index of five expenditure groups, namely the food group finished, drinks, cigarettes and tobacco by 0.78 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group by 0.08 percent; health group by 0.04 percent; education, recreation and sports groups by 0.04 percent; and the transportation, communication and financial services group by 0.02 percent. Meanwhile the group that experienced a decline in the index, namely the foodstuffs group by 0.23 percent and the clothing group by 0.09 percent.

  • The main commodity contributes to inflation during September 2018 in Medan, including red chili, potatoes, noodles, rice with side dishes, wet cakes, oily pastries and cayenne pepper.

  • Of the 23 CPI cities in Sumatra Island 16 cities experienced deflation. The highest deflation occurred in Tanjung Pandan at 1.12 percent with CPI of 141.85 and the lowest occurred in Batam by 0.09 percent with the CPI of 134.53.
