Abstract

In May 2022, inflation in Sumatera Utara Province (combined of five cities, namely Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Medan, Padangsidimpuan, and Gunungsitoli) was 0.74 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 109.18. Of the five CPI cities in Sumatera Utara, all recorded inflation, namely Sibolga at 0.85 percent; Pematangsiantar by 0.62 percent; Medan by 0.76 percent; Padangsidimpuan by 0.77 percent; and Gunung Sitoli by 0.05 percent.
  • Inflation occurred due to an increase in prices as indicated by an increase in most indexes of the expenditure group, namely the food, beverage and tobacco group by 1.42 percent; clothing and footwear group by 0.21 percent; housing, water, electricity, and household fuel groups by 0.06 percent; household equipment, equipment, and routine maintenance group by 0.52 percent; health group by 0.41 percent; transportation group by 1.16 percent; recreation, sports, and culture groups by 0.38 percent; food and beverage/restaurant supply group by 1.00 percent; and the personal care and other services group by 0.21 percent. Meanwhile the information, communication, and financial services group; and the education group did not change.
  • The main commodities contributing to inflation during May 2022 include air transportation, broiler meat, dencis fish, shallots, broiler eggs, tuna/ambu-ambu fish, and oranges.
  • The inflation rate for the calendar year (January-May 2022) is 2.75 percent and the year-on-year inflation rate (May 2022 to May 2021) is 4.18 percent.
