Abstract

North Sumatra is one of the provinces in Indonesia which has the potential for horticultural commodities, especially vegetable crops. Salak is a fruit commodity that has the potential to be developed. The potential for the development of zalacca is supported by various factors including the cultivation techniques of zalacca plants that do not require special care, zalacca plants are relatively free of pests and diseases and have fruit that has a relatively long life. The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of the horticulture sub-sector in the economy of North Sumatra, to analyze the performance of salak which includes yield crops and production as well as salak centers in North Sumatra. The analytical method used in this study is descriptive analysis. The development of the number of plants and production over the last 12 years shows a declining pattern and contraction of growth. Support from the local government, especially from the Department of Agriculture, especially regarding cultivation techniques to increase the knowledge and skills of farmers to increase production and income of farmers.
